When Residents Take Ownership, A Mobile Home Community Thrives

This story is the second in a two-part report on conditions at mobile home parks in the U.S. Read part one here.

If you had strolled one Saturday afternoon through the Park Plaza neighborhood in Fridley, Minn., you might have thought you were at just another block party. The residents were milling around a picnic buffet on folding tables on the street in front of their houses and the American flag. Kids were tossing beanbags and shouting. Neighbors were delivering Jell-O and marshmallow salad, and a pot of pork, cilantro and beans.

But this was not an ordinary picnic. Residents were celebrating the fifth anniversary of a major achievement that could inspire similar communities across the country: The day they began to take more control of their lives.

Park Plaza is a mobile home park, or what industry calls a manufactured housing community. Five years ago, the residents banded together, formed a nonprofit co-op and bought their entire neighborhood from the company that owned it. Today, these residents exert democratic control over almost 9 acres of prime suburbs, with 80 manufactured houses sited on them.

“It’s pretty wild,” says Carleton Dahl, one of the resident-owners, as he eats a hot dog. “Been a big change around here.”

Picture a mobile home community, and your image might look like Park Plaza. Most homes are white, brown or gray rectangles, with aluminum siding and pickup trucks parked in front. Some homes are bordered with flowers. Others have piles of junk.

Muslim-Owned Restaurant Is Offering Free Christmas Meals To Elderly And Homeless

London restaurant offers 3-course meal that can be claimed by elderly and homeless individuals on Christmas day – free of charge.

No one deserves to be alone during the holidays, especially during Christmas. What’s spectacular about this belief is that it’s been adopted by a Muslim-owned restaurant. Shish Restaurant, which is located in London, presented this truth in a note that also outlined a generous offer. It read:

“No one eats alone on a Christmas Day!. We are here to sit with you. . . . Any homeless or elderly are welcomed.”

CNN relays that the note went on to explain the three-course meal that can be claimed by elderly and homeless individuals on Christmas day – free of charge. The Turkish restaurant will serve meals from noon to 6 pm on December 25th. Diners will be offered soup and cacik, a Turkish herb-and-yogurt dip and the choice of chicken casserole, vegetarian casserole or chicken shish for the main course. Rice pudding will be served for dessert.

The note was posted on the restaurant’s window last month. After a photograph of the sheet was posted to social media, it quickly garnered attention. Not only was the Facebook post shared over 1k times, more than 25 residents volunteered their time to help out at the restaurant on Christmas day. Some will serve food and others will shuttle the elderly and homeless to and from the restaurant for free.

Respected Nurse Shuns Oncology and Radiation And Beats Breast Cancer

Alex Pietrowski, Staff Writer
Waking Times

What does a lifelong healer and nurse do when confronted with the devastating news she has cancer?

After Marcelle Pick, an integrative OB/GYN nurse practitioner and founder of a renowned women’s clinic in Yarmouth, Maine, was diagnosed with a type of breast cancer, she had to make one of the most important decisions of her life: proceed with oncological treatment, or draw upon her knowledge and understanding of natural health to beat cancer on her own.

In 2008 she noticed a mass in one breast which proved cancerous, and even though she had extensive experience in the medical industry, she was weary of being sucked into a fear-based decision to undergo typical treatments which would certainly include radiation. Instead, she decided she would change her body in such a way that it simply would not recognize the cancer anymore.

Forgiveness Ceremony Unites Veterans And Natives At Standing Rock Casino

Jenna Amatulli Trends Editor, The Huffington Post

On Monday, Native Americans conducted a forgiveness ceremony with U.S. veterans at the Standing Rock casino, giving the veterans an opportunity to atone for military actions conducted against Natives throughout history.

In celebration of Standing Rock protesters’ victory Sunday in halting construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, Leonard Crow Dog formally forgave Wes Clark Jr., the son of retired U.S. Army general and former supreme commander at NATO, Wesley Clark Sr.

Salon published Clark’s apology to the Natives, which read as follows:

Many of us, me particularly, are from the units that have hurt you over the many years. We came. We fought you. We took your land. We signed treaties that we broke. We stole minerals from your sacred hills. We blasted the faced of our presidents onto your sacred mountain. When we took still more land and then we took your children and then we tried to make your language and we tried to eliminate your language that God gave you, and the Creator gave you. We didn’t respect you, we polluted your Earth, we’ve hurt you in so many ways but we’ve come to say that we are sorry. We are at your service and we beg for your forgiveness.

7-Year-Old Finds Discarded Lotto Ticket – Uses The Funds To Feed The Homeless

A second grader found $100 and used the funds to donate 541 canned goods to a local food drive.

Returning lost money or donating it to a worthy cause is not as easy in real life as it seems in theory. Fortunately, a young girl didn’t have a moral dilemma when she came across a discarded lottery ticket and decided to give away the funds to help others.

41 Action News reports that 7-year-old Phoebe Brown was with her mother in a Hy-Vee supermarket in Independent, Missouri, when she found a piece of paper on the floor. Upon further examination, she learned that the piece of paper was in fact a $100 lottery ticket.

While her mother struggled with disbelief, Phoebe decided to use the funds to help her second grade class win the Sycamore Hills Elementary School food drive. Thanks to the donation of 541 canned goods from Phoebe, the class was able to accumulate and give approximately 1,700 food items.

As a reward for winning the School District’s 150th anniversary food drive competition, the children were allowed to shave teacher Herb Horseman’s long, bushy beard. The video below relays their excitement.

Solar panel farm grows 17,000 tons of food without soil, pesticides, fossil fuels or groundwater

Solar panels

NaturalNews) A new agricultural technique may have just solved the problem of growing food in some of the world’s most inhospitable places – locations that don’t currently support traditional agriculture.

In addition, the technique can save what are clearly finite resources from extinction, something all of us should clearly favor.

As reported by Natural Blaze, as the world’s population grows, so too does its demand for food. Right now, activist organizations are battling the spread of the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which have become prevalent in modern agriculture, despite the dangers they pose to our health.

The primary argument for GMO makers like Monsanto and backers in industry and government is that they are necessary because the world is running out of resources, and GMO crops are a better way to boost yields (which is not true, actually). On first hearing it, this argument might sound cogent and believable; after all, it’s “science” and scientists aren’t trying to harm us.

Technology to make agriculture sustainable and environmentally clean

But digging deeper into the impact of GMO crops and the herbicides used to make them most effective, demonstrates well that chemical farming is what’s doing real harm to finite land and soil resources.

So GMOs aren’t a viable, long-term option. Thankfully, however, a new innovation that is efficient and environmentally friendly – as well as productive – has been developed.

A new start-up called Sundrop Farms has developed what can only be called high-tech greenhouses that employ several solutions to grow crops with far less reliance on finite natural resources, even more than conventional greenhouse production. With offices in the UK, Australia and the US, the company is working to educate, enlighten and, most of all, expand.

Oregon Politicians, Community Leaders Join Protest at Standing Rock

Maggie Vespa, KGW

PORTLAND, Ore. – A growing number of Oregonians are making the trek to Standing Rock to protest the Dakota Access pipeline.

State Representative-elect for Oregon’s District 47, Diego Hernandez, arrived at Standing Rock on Thanksgiving.

“As somebody who represents a collective group of people in Oregon, I felt like it was my responsibility to make sure that I do my part in being a water protector,” he said.

With Hernandez was Joseph Santos-Lyons, who runs Apano, a local group that represents Asian and Pacific Islander communities in Portland. The pair traveled to Standing Rock to bring food, donations and raise awareness for the cause.

“They haven’t prioritized resources to ensure that there’s really good journalism and reporting happening,” Santos-Lyons said. “And that’s really disappointing. You know this encampment is committed for the long haul and the issues that they’re facing are really high stakes.”

Carina Miller, who sits on the tribal council in Warm Springs, made her second trip to Standing Rock. She said she hasn’t been there for any of the recent violent confrontations with police.
