Former president Donald Trump appeared headed to a swift acquittal in his impeachment trial Saturday after senators briefly upended the proceeding by voting to allow witnesses — only to reverse themselves following hours of negotiations with House Democrats and Trump’s defense team.
Republican and Democratic senators alike have indicated all week that they opposed allowing witness testimony because of the potential to extend the trial for weeks or even months. Many said the testimony was unlikely to change minds in the evenly divided chamber, with every Democrat expected to vote to convict the former president on the charge that he incited the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and all but a handful of Republicans expected to do the opposite. A conviction requires the support of two-thirds of senators.
According to the Washington Post, he has been aquitted. W.P., another shill for the cabal heads.
